We are very happy to place this second issue of ‘Mahanadi Basin Newsletter’ – a recent initiative of the Forum – in the public domain for all the members of the Forum and others concerned about water conflict issues in general and Mahanadi basin issues in particular. The newsletter is a platform to share insights about Forum’s ongoing research in the Mahanadi basin with all its stakeholders and also to develop a strong network of people. We also hope that this newsletter shall help to bridge the communication between the Forum and its various stakeholders of the basin.

Since the publication of first issue in the last week of November 2014, the thematic groups have been working on their respective themes, which includes secondary data analysis and field visits to the selected study sites. The objectives of the field visit are to validate the secondary data, to observe of there are any ongoing on potential of water conflicts and to continue the work through people’s participation. The thematic members also conducted a larger stakeholder meeting, where people from both states (Chhattisgarh and Odisha) of the basin participated. This meeting was conducted for one day in Bhubaneshwar on 27th February, 2015. (See the Mahanadi update section for insights from the meeting).

In addition to the brief insights of the stakeholder meeting, this issue consists of update on the thematic activities of a) Agriculture and Industries and b) Groundwater. We request the readers to please provide critical comments/ suggestions to strengthen the ongoing Forum’s work in the basin. We also encourage our viewers to contribute articles or any stories from the Mahanadi basin or any type of water conflicts observed in other parts of India. We shall publish these short articles in our forthcoming issues.

The content and form of the Newsletter are still evolving. It is a work in progress. It would take a few years to give a final shape. So your comments and suggestions would be very valuable in its development.
